Do you ever have times in your life when random things you are reading/watching/doing just happen to be related and you find yourself changing? This has been me the past few months. It all started when I heard about a great way to lose fat off your body. I enlisted Kirk to be my "diet buddy" and he did the program right alongside me. Then I was tuned into the series Jamie Olivers Food Revolution by a friend. As I eliminated sugar and all of the bad foods from my diet I found myself very cranky, short tempered and just unhappy. Thank goodness Kirk was right alongside me or I would have just given in. It was so hard. I was kicking a lifelong addiction. I didn't know I was addicted to sugar, but I was. An amazing thing happened though by the third week of no sugar. I was really tasting food. Apples were sooooo sweet, vegetables tasted great without ranch, spices instead of sauces flavored our meats. I felt energy, not cravings. It has been amazing to feel this way. I am no longer reaching for soda or chocolate or sweets. I feel like I ate more out of habit than necessity. As a bonus I have lost 22 pounds so far, and I am so ready to lose more!! The other great thing that has come out of this, is my children want to eat what I am eating. Vegetables are such a regular thing now, salads without dressings, baked and grilled meats, limited sweets and no sugar drinks. What brought this post on is the school. I am not impressed with how they use food. My boys are given candy for rewards on a regular basis, and I can not count how many pizza and pop parties they have had. Today is Logans pizza party for track. Isn't that ironic? Let's celebrate all our running and workouts by eating pizza and soda. What did they ask parents to provide? Soda and treats. I understand that pizza is cheap and can feed a lot of kids, but come on!! I am sick of it. So in protest of this kind of eating, Logan and I came up with something to bring, all fresh fruits and veggies, and that pineapple is soooo sweet!!!!!
I think if kids are given healthy choices they will take them. Mine do. I'm not saying treats are horrible. We have carmel popcorn and chips and candy.....but not all the time!! We'll see how the pizza party goes, but I am betting these will be empty by the end! Beth

Oh my friend you have hit on a hot topic for me! I loved The Food Revolution! LOVED IT! We've slowly been eliminating all processed food from our house. Like you guys we have it every once in awhile but for the most part our eating habits have totally changed! I love it! I was just telling a friend this morning how proud I was of our breakfast and lunch! Good, natural stuff!
The Meridian School District has done away with junk food at parties. Not all teacher adhere to the rules but most do. Now if we can just get the cafeteria to be healthy! Garrett rarely buys lunch but he always buys milk. After watching The Food Revolution he chooses white milk now. :)
See - I told you it was a hot topic for me! :)
Way to go on the 22 lbs too! WOW!
That is fantastic! I've made fits and starts at trying to implement this.. I need to just knuckle down and do it.
Good for you! We jumped on that bandwagon recently too, lots of veggies and we love it.
You are so right about what you eat your kids eat. Sometimes I feel bad because my kids snacks don't consist of fruit roll ups and teddy grahams but when I ask what they want to snack Maryn is asking for cottage cheese and peaches. With this pregnancy this is the first time I've even had cravings for sugary things and it's so hard to resist. It helps just not to have it in the house but if I do have it on hand I keep it out of sight because if I see it I eat it! That fruit looks so divine right now.
Congrats on the pounds lost, Beth! Tom came home from camping and told me that you had Kirk had done the diet we are doing now. I had kicked the sugar habit enough that I'm not having any problem with that. I do, however, wish the weight would keep dropping at a nice steady rate. Down 10.4 after 12 days.
