It's the little things...

So today is our 18th anniversary!!!!!!

I get so excited every year.  It's like WOW we made it this far???  We can probably do anything now!  Each year brings more changes, more challenges, more trials and more joy.  This has been by far one of our best years.  We are closer than ever due to some very personal trials that we had to face together.  I really felt like there was no one else we could turn to but each other and the Lord.  And it made us even stronger as a couple and I'm thankful for that.

I thought of an analogy the other day when I was baking.  I made a batch of krumkake batter and it just didn't seem quite right.  I cooked some of it and it for sure wasn't right.  The cookies were lacy and weren't holding together like they should.  They almost crumbled when I rolled them.  They weren't strong.  So I made another batch of batter paying VERY close attention to the steps and being extra careful not to over beat the eggs, and to slowly combine the flour mixture.  It STILL did not turn out.  It was the same as the first.  I was beside myself.  What was wrong with this batter!!!!  (My boys may or may not have witnessed me freaking out about it...)  After a lot of thinking and analyzing I realized I was using unsalted butter.  Do you know how much salt is in a cube of salted butter???  1/4 of a teaspoon.  THAT'S ALL!!!  Could 1/4 of a teaspoon really make a difference!!??  Well, I was desperate and decided to try one more time and add 1/4 of a teaspoon to the butter after I melted it.  Guess what?  PERFECT. BATTER.  I kid you not, it turned out amazing and it cooked wonderful krumkakes that were strong and beautiful. (And I made 190 of those babies!!!  I know it's crazy!  It was for my family history presentation at church-I'll have to blog about it later)

After thinking about this for a few days, I realized something.  Kirk is my salt.

I am a little "dramatic" as he would say.  I like to make a mark.  I like to go big.  I have big crazy ideas and I want to share them with the world.  But I couldn't do it without Kirk.  He is almost always in the background making my ideas an dreams happen.  He supports me like you wouldn't believe.  He will do any job to help me.  He will scour stores to find what I need.  He will stay up and cut out paper flowers.  He will even look in trash cans for me.....I can't be my best, strongest self without him.  He never wants the glory either.  He is happy just knowing that he helped and then he lets everyone thank me and pay attention to me.  I am coming to realize how complete he makes me. Even though I compare him to a tiny 1/4 teaspoon of salt, in my life it's what makes all the difference.

He is such a wonderful man and I am so blessed to have him as my eternal companion.
Happy Anniversary!!!!!   Beth
