A moment.

I had a "moment" today.  One of those moments where you take a good look at yourself and your priorities.  A moment that changed me as a mom.  It seems so small a thing, but to me it was huge.

A little background before I tell you of the moment.

It has been a really busy week for me (and it's just Tuesday!!!)  I bit off more than I could chew, and was feeling the crunch of it all.  I've been running all over gathering supplies for baking, taking the van in to be fixed, volunteering at school, picking up kids and trying to plan for our trip on Saturday on top of all the regular things like making dinner, having FHE, helping with homework, doing household chores.
I've been up early and late.  I'm tired and I am feeling stretched.  So today, with all the crazy going on, I knew Logan had a wrestling match after school.  At East-which is 30 minutes from my house.  I hate to say it, but he's struggling.

His last match he was pinned in less than a minute.

I thought, "why should I drive all the way to East to see a 1 minute match and drive all the way back home."

And then that little voice in my head that seems really good at giving me perspective said, "What if he was an amazing wrestler?  What if he was the big winner on the team?  Would you want to go then?"

Ouch.

And that was my moment.

I dropped everything and went.  I watched him smile as he saw me walk in, and I watched him get pinned in 30 seconds.  But I showed up.  I showed him that he matters, win or lose.  I am his biggest fan and will show up every time.  I will feel his pain and I will give him a thumbs up no matter what.  I will bring him his favorite drink when I pick him up and tell him "good job!"  So what if I missed a meeting and am way behind on my orders.  My kids are so important.  But they will not know that if I don't show up.

I hope someday he remembers my smiling face at his matches and knows that I am there for him the rest of his life, win or lose.   Beth

Thanks for sharing this. I played varsity sports for 4 years and I wish I had a mom that supported me like that. It still stings to know that watching television was more important than being there for me.

Thank you for the reminder. This week I have spent more time just holding Livy who just had surgery than I have in a really long time. I need to enjoy the fact that she wants me instead of getting frustrated that I can't get anything done. It helps when you put the little things in perspective. And in regards to Debbie's comment, I feel bad for her. I was lucky because I had a devoted mother that came to everything. Trust me, it matters to them and they will remember it, I still do.

Ah... wow. It probably means even more to him that you're there when he *does* get pinned in 30 seconds. I love the way you wrote this post. Thanks for the reminder ... :)
