Butterflies

I wanted to share a bit of my lesson today in Young women's. It was about becoming self-reliant and I was having a hard time finding something to build my lesson around. My teaching style is to find an object or song or picture and build around it. It just makes it easier for me. Saturday was crunch time, and I finally thought of butterflies! I remember reading about how they have to let their wings unfold and then dry after they break out of the chrysalis, they can't just fly away. I thought of the young women and how they are at the stage where they are getting ready to fly, but they have to wait for their wings to unfold and dry. I think they understood and my lesson had a lot of good discussions about parents and our relationships with them. For a handout I gave them each a cute mirror with some butterfly rub-ons (I had fun at Michaels getting some "inspiration" for my lesson and found the mirrors on clearance for 50 cents)

I also gave them a card to be opened when they needed it (like after a fight with parents or a frustrating day at school or home) In the card was a poem I wrote. I just sat down and wrote it without thinking or stopping, it was very cool! I hope it helps them when they need it.

Just as the butterfly waits for her wings to dry,

You too must wait for your chance to fly.

Take a deep breath and learn all you can,

There are many who love you and DO understand.

Line upon line and grace to grace,

Do not despair you'll find your place.

Sooner than you know you will be free,

And you can go on your path confidently.

Remember there is one who knows you well,

He is there to listen as problems you tell.

Just trust in his great plan for you,

And to your values always stay true.
